C. CRUDE IMPACT: INCREASING MY INDEPENDENCE FROM FOSSIL FUELS

A. OPINION PAPER: EARTH WEEK-1971

Wisconsin’s Senator Gaylord Nelson was one of the principal founders of Earth Day. Read his speech entitled, Earth Week-1971*, research the environmental issues discussed in his speech and explore how you can effect change.

How have these issues changed in the forty years since his speech? How might these issues change in the next forty years? What can you as an individual do about it? Defend your opinion with critical and creative thinking and sound research.

*The speech is available for download at www.fairchildchallenge.org/hs/challenges

B. NATURE INSPIRED ESSAY: LIVING SIMPLY

Consider the way in which you could simplify your life, the things you could change about how you live or what you possess that is not “a necessity.” Choose a modern convenience that you rely on daily, give it up for three days and write about the effect the experiment had on your life and those closest to you. Work cited is not required for this essay, because it is a self-reflection.

C. CRUDE IMPACT: INCREASING MY INDEPENDENCE FROM FOSSIL FUELS

Our lives revolve around fossil fuels. Watch the documentary Crude Impact, critically evaluate its message and consider how you can increase your independence from fossil fuels. In your paper, describe lifestyle changes that you plan to make in the short-term (this week), medium-term (this year) and long-term (this decade) that will reduce your dependence on fossil fuels. Explain how the documentary may (or may not) have inspired you to change and include your own brief critical analysis of the film.
